As a photographer, one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences is photographing children. Their boundless energy and genuine expressions can create stunning, heartwarming images, but getting them camera-ready and cooperative can sometimes be a task. Here are my top tips for parents to help get their kids excited for a photoshoot and what to bring to ensure the session runs smoothly.

Getting Kids Excited for the Photoshoot

  1. Talk About It Ahead of Time: Start discussing the photoshoot a few days in advance. Explain what will happen and how much fun it will be. This helps build anticipation and makes the experience feel special while also mentally preparing them.

  2. Involve Them in the Planning: Let your kids have a say in their outfits or props they might want to bring. If you want them in a specific style you can have them choose between options. When they feel involved, they’re more likely to be enthusiastic.

  3. Make it Fun: Emphasize the fun aspects of the photoshoot. Tell them about the silly faces they can make, the games they can play, and the snacks they’ll get as rewards. Turning it into a game can ease any anxiety.

  4. Do mock photoshoots at home with the kids taking turns as a photographer:

  5. Bring a Family Member or Friend: Young children have short attention spans. By bringing someone along, the kids can take a break to play with them while other family members have a chance to be the centre of the photos. This also helps to take pressure of you (the parents) so that you can enjoy the experience too.

  6. Play Games and Be Silly: Your kids will be the most comfortable with you and their siblings. Get them into a silly mood by starting a tickle fight, playing hide and seek, or any other fun activity you know can put a smile on their face and set the tone.

  7. Bribes and Rewards: It’s perfectly okay to use a little incentive. Promise a fun activity after the photoshoot, like a trip to the park or a special treat. Just make sure to follow through!

What to Bring to a Family Photoshoot

  1. Snacks and Drinks: Pack some non-messy snacks and drinks to keep the kids’ energy up and to use as rewards. Avoid anything that could stain their clothes or faces.

  2. Favourite Toys or Comfort Items: Bringing a favourite toy or comfort item can help soothe any nerves and provide a sense of familiarity. Plus, they can make for cute props in the photos. Keep in mind that its likely the object will end up in photos so pick something cute.

  3. Extra Clothes: Accidents happen, especially with little ones. Bring a change of clothes for everyone, just in case. Also, if you plan to have different looks in your photos, having a change of clothes is necessary.

  4. Wet Wipes: Essential for quick clean-ups. Whether it’s a runny nose, a small spill, or a bit of dirt, wet wipes are lifesavers.

  5. Props for Fun: If you have specific props in mind, like a special blanket, a sporting item, or seasonal items (like Christmas hats or Halloween pumpkins), bring them along. These can add a personal touch to your photos.

  6. A Blanket or Mat: For outdoor shoots, a blanket or mat to sit on can be helpful. It keeps clothes clean and provides a nice seating area for family shots. Discuss any ideas and visions you have for the shoot with your photographer to see what props they have to bring and what could work well for your shoot.

  7. Patience and Positivity: Kids can pick up on stress and frustration. Stay patient and positive, and your children are more likely to mirror that attitude, which is why it can be very helpful to bring someone extra to help care for the kids. Remember, the goal is to capture joyful, candid moments.

A successful photoshoot with kids hinges on preparation and a relaxed, fun atmosphere. By getting your children excited beforehand and bringing along a few essentials, you can ensure that the session is enjoyable for everyone involved. As a photographer, I love capturing the authentic, joyful moments of families, and with a little planning, we can create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
