In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, moments spent with family often feel fleeting. As years pass by, memories fade, but photographs have the remarkable ability to freeze those cherished moments in time.
Family photoshoots are wonderful opportunities to capture special moments and create lasting memories. Whether you’re planning your first session or looking to make the next one even better, proper preparation can make a significant difference in the outcome. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for a memorable family photoshoot:
1. Choose the Right Photographer: Selecting a photographer whose style resonates with your family’s personality is key. You also want to connect with them and make sure they are receptive to your goals and vision.
2. Decide on the Location: Consider locations that hold meaning for your family or reflect your interests. Whether it’s a local park, a favourite beach, or your own backyard, the location should complement your family’s style and provide a comfortable setting for everyone. If you are unsure of which locations would photograph best just let me know of the places you have in mind and we can discuss which will bring your vision to life.
3. Coordinate Outfits: Coordinate rather than match outfits to achieve a cohesive look without appearing overly uniform. Choose a colour palette that complements each other and the chosen location or theme. Avoid busy patterns and logos that can distract from your family’s faces. If you are unsure of styling it's always a great idea to search Pinterest or IG to see examples of different aesthetics that could suit your family. Keep in mind you also want to feel comfortable in your outfits - if you aren't comfortable it will show in the photos.
4. Plan Ahead: Schedule the photo shoot at a time in the day when you know everyone is well-rested and fed, especially if you have young children. I suggest that you arrive early to the location to avoid feeling rushed and so that kids can settle in and play before the shoot begins - this leads to more relaxed photos. If you have young children don't forget the snacks! As the photographer, I will also arrive early to be sure we have some time to discuss the vision and connect.
5. Communicate with Your Photographer: Discuss your vision, preferences, and any specific poses or shots you want beforehand — we can discuss this in advance and on the day of the shoot before we begin taking photos. It also helps if you share information about your family, such as personalities, interests, or likes and dislikes to help me capture authentic moments.
6. Bring Props and Personal Touches: Consider bringing props that reflect your family’s
hobbies or interests, such as books, musical instruments, or sports equipment. These items can add personality and create unique photo opportunities. If you are unsure about this, feel free to discuss your ideas with me when we are organizing the shoot, and I can give you tons of input.
7. Relax and Have Fun: I know this is easier said than done, especially when doing shoots with kids. I suggest having someone extra who can come to the shoot that can help take care of the kids to help take pressure and responsibility off your plate so you are more able to get into the moment. During the photoshoot, take lots of deep breaths and try to enjoy the experience with your family. I will help encourage natural interactions and genuine smiles by engaging in activities or conversations that bring out everyone’s personalities and get the kids playing.
8. Be Patient and Flexible: Photographing families, especially with young children, can be unpredictable. Be patient if things don’t go as planned and trust your photographer’s expertise in capturing beautiful moments amidst the spontaneity.
9. Prepare for Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast leading up to the photoshoot and prepare. Have sunscreens, juice/water, or jackets on hand if needed, and be open to embracing unexpected weather conditions for unique photo opportunities. If it rains we will absolutely reschedule.
10. Review and Preserve Your Photos: After the photoshoot, carefully review the proofs and choose your favourite pictures. Keep in mind that the final result will be even better, so try not to be hung up on small details. Just focus on the overall vibe of the photos and your favourite faces/emotions and moments - the rest will be adjusted to achieve the best possible result. The final photos will be in high resolution, and I suggest you print them! If you need suggestions on ways and places to print them, please reach out, and I will give you plenty of advice.
A well-prepared family photoshoot can be a joyful experience that yields cherished memories and beautiful photographs. By investing time in planning, communication, and embracing spontaneity, we’ll ensure that the photos capture the true essence of your family’s love and connection. Remember, the most memorable photos often arise from moments of genuine happiness and togetherness.
